Standing ovation from packed house…

EMFF Feb 12 2016Ealing Youth Orchestra’s concert in the 2106 Ealing Music and Film Festival received a rapturous reception from a capacity audience at St Barnabas Church in Ealing last night. In the Festival’s fourth year EYO decided to mount one of its most ambitious concerts yet, as over two hundred performers combined to spectacular effect in Sir William Walton’s epic oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast. The London Oriana Choir and LCM Chorus, prepared by their chorus masters Dominic Peckham and Paul Ayres, joined EYO and members of the English Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor Leon Gee. This was the culmination of an exciting new mentoring partnership between EYO and ECO, with ECO players leading sectional rehearsals over the last two terms and then performing side by side in this concert.

The concert started with a rousing performance by the huge combined orchestra of Sibelius’s tone poem Finlandia, followed by a superb account of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (as orchestrated by Ravel). The orchestral playing was hugely impressive with some standout solos from trumpeters Sam Thorp and Patrick Wilson.

EYO’s Conductor and Music Director Leon Gee commented: “Last night represents a truly massive achievement for EYO, an inspirational performance from start to end, which will I will certainly remember as a real highlight of the last decade.”
