Applications are welcomed from young musicians aged 13-18. The usual approximate minimum standard for audition is Grade 6 (or equivalent – don’t worry if you haven’t taken exams) though in some sections the standard of successful applicants tends to be higher, while allowances may be made for “shortage” instruments. See below for audition requirements.

Membership is through audition and by termly subscription (for 2018/19 £285 a year or £95 a term). The Trustees of EYO wish membership to be available to young people of suitable musical talent regardless of background or parental income and The John Railton Memorial Bursary Fund, established in memory of EYO’s founder, exists to ensure no-one is excluded on grounds of finance. Full information is available here:

More information about the orchestra can be found in the EYO Information Booklet 2018-19 and the EYO policy for safeguarding children 2018 (PDFs).

All string, woodwind and brass players are asked to perform a movement from a sonata, concerto, or a graded exam piece by a ‘classical’ composer. Please bring a copy of your music for use by the panel (the accompaniment part would be most suitable).

Percussion players are asked where possible to prepare pieces on snare drum, timpani, and optionally, their own tuned percussion.

All applicants may be asked to play a short piece of sight-reading, which will be available to prepare during the warm-up time before the audition.
