Success for Josh at 2016 Concertothon

Josh Blows - EYO Concertothon winner 2016

EYO’s annual Concertothon was won yesterday in grand style by 17 year old trombonist Joshua Blows, with a rousing performance of Launy Grøndahl’s rarely heard Trombone Concerto. Adjudicator Simon Rayner, principal horn at the Royal Opera House and professor at the Royal College of Music, complimented Josh on his great sense of musical style and the technical accomplishment with which he played some very demanding music. Also highly commended were Owen Saldanha for his poetic performance of movements from Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, Amelia Wang for her beautifully expressive violin performance of “Nigun” from the Baal Shem Suite by Ernest Bloch and Alma Wilson for her stylish and virtuosic handling of Mozart’s youthful Bassoon Concerto. The orchestra was in fine form too, showing its versatility in a wide range of styles.

EYO’s Music Director and conductor of the concert Leon Gee commented: “It was a particularly strong year also featuring some varied and killer repertoire.  All soloists dealt with this awesome responsibility with fantastic conviction, all showing a fine understanding of the overall context too. Orchestral accompaniment was wonderfully supportive at all times.”
