EYO scales the heights in epic Strauss and Dvorak

A packed St Barnabas roared its approval following sensational performances of two huge orchestral works on Friday night by EYO’s young players, supported by celebrated partner orchestra the London Mozart Players and players from the Royal College of Music, in the 2018 Ealing Music and Film Festival. First the combined orchestras were joined by the brilliant young Japanese cellist Akito Goto for a searingly emotional performance of Dvorak’s wonderful cello concerto, before the forces were augmented even further for a monumental performance of Richard Strauss’s huge Alpine Symphony. A total of 125 players, including church organ, multiple brass and massed percussion, produced an overwhelming sound and compelling rendition of Strauss’s late romantic masterpiece, which narrates the passage up and then down an Alpine mountain over the course of a day and a night. EYO’s conductor and music director Leon Gee described the performance as “truly transformative – an epic event”, which had enriched many people’s lives.
